Wine tasting:
One of the regions biggest draw-cards – and for good reason. Set in beautiful rolling hills and native bush, Matakana is home to several renowned vineyards. Grab a copy of the Matakana Coast wine trail map for self-guided exploring, or take a guided day tour and enjoy all that the region has to offer. Regional Parks & Beaches: Visit our picturesque regional parks including Mahurangi, Scandretts, Tawharanui and Pakiri. Swim, surf, walk and sunbathe at any one of the stunning beaches in the region including Pakiri, Tawharanui, Martins Bay and Omaha. Snorkel with the fish at Goat Island wildlife reserve or enjoy the experience from the comfort of the glass-bottom boat. Farmers' Markets: The local 'New-Zealand famous' Farmers' Market is a foodies delight. Grab a coffee and browse talented arts, crafts, and artisan foods. The dumplings are not to be missed! Walking and Cycling: Ride the Matakana Cycle Trail from Matakana to Omaha via Jones Road and Point Wells with some awe-inspiring views over Omaha Bay. There are plenty of short walks around the towns, coastal walkways and forests; Snells Beach Beachfront Reserve, Parry Kauri Park, Sandspit Spit or Mansion House at Kawau Island. For the more ambitious, hike the Leigh coastal walkways between Ti Point and Goat Island, or head to the hills on the Mt Tamahunga walkway, also part of the Te Araroa Trail from Puhoi to Pakiri. Art: Matakana Coast boasts more than a dozen boutique and high-end art galleries. A few must-sees are the Morris and James pottery store, Sculptureum and Brick Bay Sculpture Trail. Activities: The Matakana Coast is an all seasons destination, with plenty of year round opportunities to get outdoors, or simply dine and shop. Opt to sit back and relax (wine in hand) at Matakana's boutique cinema screening first-run films, followed by a look around some beautiful eclectic stores. Take a short ferry ride to Kawau Island and wander through the majestic Mansion House, or for a birds eye view of the area, take a Skywork Helicopter ride and discover the scenic countryside by air. For those seeking adventure, take it all in on horse-back while riding along Pakiri Beach. Play a round of golf at Omaha or Warkworth golf courses. Eat: On your way north, stop in at the famous Puhoi Pub - or sample some of the award-winning local cheese at Puhoi Valley Cheese. Grab a gelato in the sun at Charlie's Gelato Garden, or enjoy dining at any one of the local eateries. Sample local craft beers and hand-made pizzas at the Sawmill cafe in Leigh. |
